Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
