This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
