The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
